How to smile across the room…online.
Jamie update:
So the guy she was testing out that fabulous smile on is on
Facebook. Well, duh. And earlier today Jamie was bold enough
to even think about…wait for it, wait for it…friending him.
Ah! This of course took
much deliberation. (Jamie
watches a lot of TV and often
forgets that real life isn’t perfect.
She likes to have things scripted for her if possible.) How would it look, should she friend
him now or wait, is it too forward, what if he refuses?
Ok, friending someone on Facebook is just about as serious
as smiling at someone you pass in the hall. It’s nothing.
I’ve got over 400 friends on my Facebook and I don’t know half of
them. Whatever. So after looking at the astrological
charts, doing some soul searching and taking a yoga class she finally decided
to do the deed. And click. Ah!
Survey says?
Good choice! He accepted,
wrote her back a long email and they’ll be getting together for drinks in a
couple days. Score! Now if we can just get her through date
#1. That same book, What Men Want
gives a few “first date tips”.
(But first, may I just comment on the title of that book. I mean, I think we all know what men
want and doesn’t that description take up all of half a page? I think maybe How to Keep Men
Interested in You With Your Clothes On
would have been a better title, yes?
But I digress.)
Date #1 is a lot like getting him to ask you out. Smile, make him feel comfortable by
keeping conversation going (ask questions) and don’t criticize. So basically yeah, we’re right back to
“stroke the ego”. Ok, I have
brothers, cute brothers, so I like boys and admit that most don’t have huge
egos. It’s scary for both
sexes.
I guess you could say the goal is to be a nice person and
treat them like they are a nice person too.
How'd Jamie's date go? Is she engaged or at least planning on smiling more?

Jamie update - First date: they met for drinks and apps at Koi. (Jamie knows ALL the hot spots in the city.) She reported back to say it was the normal chit chat, first date questions, etc. And her fabulous smile? "I think so, but the cameras weren't rolling so I just don't know." Being the wonderfully fab chick that she is, Jamie left that next day for a business trip to Paris and got back home a few days ago. She shot her new man the "back in town" email so now we wait.
On a side note...Here are a few thoughts Jamie emailed me. Here 411 on the status of European men.
Jamie: Why is it that all European men are pigs? They are sooo flirtatious and fun, yet you find out that this adorable guy is married with a baby on the way? Is it that it's acceptable to not be monogamous? Don't get me wrong, I was a good girl, but it was very tempting! When in Rome...or Paris.
